Rachael Rose Luckey, Secretary of the Rampart Village (Los Angeles, CA) Neighborhood Council and Executive Director of LATransCon.org, released this statement on Tuesday regarding the violence that transpired in Charlottesville, VA:
It is with great unease for the future of our democracy I put pen to paper this day.
As one of only eight openly transgender politicians holding elected office in this country, it is my duty to speak out about racism, bigotry and intolerance. These have no place in a free open society. Ever.
Without reservation, I condemn the hateful violence and needless deaths/injuries resulting from the disgusting display by white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA on August 12, 2017. This was nothing less than an act of domestic terrorism.
I am adding my voice to those Americans, from Los Angeles to D.C., who are incensed by their ideology of hatred. As of this writing, 45th has not called this what it is, a domestic terrorist attack. I am doubtful he ever will.
This is why I strongly urge every elected official and politician from coast to coast, regardless of party affiliation, to do what 45th is refusing to do. Add your voice of condemnation to the public dialogue by making it well known, through any and all media outlets, your feelings about what just happened, not in some distant foreign land, but right here in the “Land of the Free”.
I call on legislative bodies and elected officials to introduce motions in support of taking a position of condemnation and to include the words “Domestic Terrorist Attack” when referring to Sunday’s tragic events.
If 45th will not speak these words, then we will speak them for him.
My love and healing energy goes out to the families of the fallen and those who were injured. Please know that you are not alone in the fight for a civil society where racism and bigotry are once again pushed back into the shadows. Your sacrifices are truly heroic.
We must always speak out and can never back down! Resist.
